Our client is a family owned and operated business located in the beautiful area of Mountford in Tasmania - close to the thriving city of Launceston.

The business retains traditional and strong family values that are applied in their operational approach and people management. The family has been farming for over five generations and employs up to 150 seasonal and permanent staff.

This is a highly successful growing enterprise that sees the berries sold into the Australian domestic market and include strawberries, raspberries and blackberries.

The Role

Working closely with the Operations Manager, this position plays a strong supportive role with the overall operation of the farm. Assisting with the efficient production of crops, you will perform field preparation, planting, harvest and staff supervision.

Working with staff, supervisors and field crew to create and foster a productive and efficient team environment, you will also assist in managing seasonal workers. The role is required to work an average of 40 hours per week with longer days during harvest season.

Dedicated to a culture of safety and excellence in all your tasks, your duties will include but not be limited to:

  • Efficient production of crops including field preparation, planting, harvest and delivery
  • Perform tractor work, including maintenance and light repairs of machinery and equipment
  • Work with staff, supervisors and field crew to create a productive, efficient and professional team environment
  • Assist in managing seasonal workers
  • Basic irrigation set up and maintenance
  • Project supervision
  • Maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior of infrastructure and fields
  • Monitor quality of product, packaging, and labelling
  • Oversee food safety protocols
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and participate in daily operational decisions.
  • Completing minor recurring tasks as required.
  • The work requires the physical and mental capacity to contribute daily to an often rigorous, fast-paced, and deeply rewarding horticulture business.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate has experience in a similar role with a broad farming knowledge and the ability to use a range of machinery and tools. Applicant should be self-motivated, hardworking, eager to learn, have excellent people skills, be a great multi-tasker and in good physical condition. Ability to perform certain tasks such as heavy lifting, repetitive grasping, standing, bending, and walking are useful attributes.

Self-managing, proactive, efficient and flexible, to be considered for the role, it's important you can address the following criteria:

  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Applicant needs to have proven experience or education in agriculture or horticulture
  • Ability to manage a diverse group of people
  • Some mechanical aptitude and experience with agriculture machinery
  • Great attention to detail, ability to multi-task
  • Familiarity with berries would be an advantage
  • Manual Drivers licence is essential
  • MR, HR and/or Forklift licence is an advantage but not essential
